First Wave - Transcript

The following scenes are script excerpts from the end of the teaser (I don't have the beginning, but it's basically more of the same of Rook telling the kid to shoot something), a scene towards the end of Act Three that reintroduces Rook from the teaser, and all of the Rook scenes in Act Four, which adds up to most of Act Four.

TEASER

BOY Yes...

ROOK Then USE IT.

ON THE BOY suddenly standing now. The chair and Rook have vanished.

ROOK'S VOICE Use it...

The Boy raises his hand. Finds he now holds a GUN.

ROOK'S VOICE (CONT'D) You want the pain to stop? All you have to do... is shoot.

The boy is now staring at some UNSEEN THING OFF CAMERA. His face tightens with emotion. Slowly he raises the gun.

ROOK'S VOICE (CONT'D) Shoot, Cade...

And YOUNG CADE FOSTER points the gun, his hand shaking. Suddenly Rook's face FILLS THE FRAME as he roars —

ROOK SHOOT, CADE!

Cade SCREAMS as he pulls the trigger, and

TIGHT - THE GUN BARREL fires DIRECTLY INTO FRAME, and ON THE BLAST —

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. AIRSTREAM TRAILER - NIGHT

As the adult FOSTER sits bolt upright in his bed with a cry, heart pounding like a jackhammer, the GUNSHOT echoing away into silence. He slumps back, badly shaken. And OFF his eyes, wide in the darkness —

ACT THREE

CUT TO:

INT. WHITE ROOM - DAY

Cade sits in the metal chair, tense with apprehension. Cade doesn't have long to wait as — A jolting ELECTRIC SHOCK suddenly shoots through the chair. Cade SPASMS and cries out involuntarily.

ROOK It hurts, doesn't it?

Cade is hyperventilating. Stares at Rook with hatred. ANOTHER JOLT and he cries out.

YOUNG CADE YES IT HURTS!

Rook begins circling the Boy.

ROOK It makes you angry, doesn't it? (pushing) Makes you hate.

Cade clamps his mouth shut, refusing to speak. Rook moves closer.

ROOK (CONT'D) I know about your life. How your father died in the war.

YOUNG CADE He was a hero.

Rook steps behind Cade, out of his view behind the chair —

ROOK Some hero....

As he steps out of Cades view, Rook MORPHS INTO NED (NOTE: if feasible, an ONLINE SUPER/DISSOLVE is sufficient here).

NED He abandoned you and Rose to me. I drink... I lie... I hurt you...

ACT FOUR

FADE IN:

INT. WHITE ROOM - DAY

Dr. Rook and the ASSOCIATE from Cade's apartment. In the distance, we see Young Cade, strapped to the chair.

ASSOCIATE The Council does not approve of your actions. They want hard data on the human subjects.

ROOK Don't they understand that I'm offering them more than that? I'm offering them victory over the humans.

ASSOCIATE By following a mystical prophesy? (contemptuous) That the fate of all the Gua hangs on the existence of one twelve year-old child...

ROOK Not any child. The son of a dead warrior, in a great city by the lake...

He looks over to CADE, strapped into the metal chair.

ROOK (CONT'D) One who always acts selflessly... who has an instinct for the truth... Who will do what is right for humanity, whatever the cost. (beat) He exists. Tell the Council they'll have to wait a little longer.

ASSOCIATE Tell them yourself. (off Rook's look) You're to return with all your research. The experiment is terminated.

ROOK They can't do that! I'm close... the current subject may be the One I'm after!

ASSOCIATE That is no longer your choice, Rook. The Council is not to be defied.

He turns and walks away. He gets a few feet — A BULLET slams into his back, pitching him forward. REVERSE - ROOK Holding a gun, bathed in the glow of the O.S. DISSOLVE.

ROOK Neither am I.

And OFF Rook, as he stares down at the disappearing body —

NEW ANGLE - CLOSE - YOUNG CADE Strapped into the chair, wide-eyed with shock as he reacts to the killing of the Associate.

FOSTER'S VOICE Cade.

Cade flinches, searches for the source of the voice.

YOUNG CADE Who's there?

Foster steps into view. Young Cade cannot see him.

FOSTER Cade, you can't see me. Just listen. All of this is a test. You can win.

YOUNG CADE I can't...

FOSTER Believe me. You're going to make it through this.

YOUNG CADE How?!

FOSTER Because there's something you know.

YOUNG CADE What? What do I know?

FOSTER (distant) The truth.

YOUNG CADE I don't understand...

There's no reply. Foster is gone.

YOUNG CADE (CONT'D) What truth? (no answer) What truth!

ROOK'S VOICE A profound question, for a small boy.

Cade swivels his head to see ROOK approaching.

ROOK Shall we find the answer?

And OFF this ominous note, the room FLARES into BLINDING WHITE. As Cade squints into the glare —

CUT TO:

INT. WHITE ROOM - DAY

Cade blinks into the glare. As the light dies down, we see he's still in the WHITE ROOM, but before him he now sees — The TABLE and TWO CHAIRS from his SITTING ROOM. ROSE sits there, looking drawn and sad. She holds the PHOTO and DOG- TAGS from Foster's real father. Cade tries to rise from the metal chair.

YOUNG CADE Mom!

Rose doesn't react. Rook lays a hand on Cade's shoulder.

ROOK She can't hear you. Wait.

Cade turns — Rook is gone, and the man from the photo, ROBERT FOSTER stands there, wearing his army uniform.

YOUNG CADE Dad...?

ROBERT FOSTER There's only one way to make him stop, Cade. Kill him.

Cade's finger tightens on the trigger.

NED Shoot!

ROBERT FOSTER Shoot him, son. It's the only way.

NED Do it, kid! What are you waiting for?

ROBERT FOSTER It's true, Cade!

NED Shoot, dammit! I'm your enemy!

A calm comes over Cade. Realization. Suddenly he knows.

YOUNG CADE No you're not.

He suddenly turns the gun on Robert Foster. Cade's face is filled with sadness at what he must do — and resolve.

YOUNG CADE (CONT'D) You are.

And Cade SHOOTS Robert Foster. The instant the gun FIRES INTO FRAME (as in the Teaser) — The room suddenly FLARES TO WHITE as the sound of the shot echoes. As the echo fades and the flare dies, we are in —

INT. WHITE ROOM - DAY - MOMENTS LATER

The APARTMENT DRESSING is now gone. Cade is strapped into the metal chair. Rook stands before him, incredulous.

ROOK Why? He was your father!

YOUNG CADE No. He was a lie. My father would never have done that.

He looks up at Rook, realizing something.

YOUNG CADE (CONT'D) I beat you, didn't I? And that means we can beat you all.

ROOK You're the one I've been seeking, Cade Foster. The one the fate of all Gua rests on.

Rook moves closer.

ROOK (CONT'D) But it won't matter. The prophecy ends here...

A shiny METAL BAND slies from the chair back, loops around Cade's throat.

ROOK (CONT'D) Because your life ends here.

The band begins to tighten. Cade gags, struggling to breath. Suddenly a SHOT rings out. Rook is hit in the back. He staggers, clutching his back in agony, turns to see — THE MYSTERIOUS MAN standing in the room, a shiny GUA GUN in his extended hand. Rook stares, eyes wide in disbelief that this is happening.

ROOK (CONT'D) But I've found him... I found the Chosen One...

MYSTERY MAN And I thank you.

And he FIRES AGAIN. As the gun blasts — ROOK is blown off his feet and slammed to the floor. The glow of his O.C. DISSOLVE reflects over Cade's face. The Mystery Man moves quickly to Cade, presses a button on the back of the chair. The METAL BAND withdraws. Cade sags in the chair, gasping, as the man pulls back the bands from Cade's wrists. As Cade slumps, the man catches him in his arms. He turns and carries Cade from the white room. As his body WIPES CAMERA —
